Opal is a five-month-old glossy-haired tortoiseshell female who was surrendered to our shelter on January 26, xxxx with her mom Cubby when her owner became disabled. Opal and her mom were sick, so they lived at a loving foster home until they were strong and healthy again. Opal shows off her pouncing and jumping skills when playing with a cat teaser toy, and skillfully leaps high into the air to catch the toy, and always manages to land squarely on all four feet! As a teenage cat, Opal has a lot of energy and occasionally gets that burst of turbo-energy where she?ll dash across the room, up and over a chair, and skitter on into the next room as though she?s jet propelled! Giving her ample attention and playtime helps satisfy that excess energy, and soon she?ll be found napping in a furry pile with her mom, Cubby.
Opal is very fastidious in using her litter box, and also consistent in just using her sisal scratching post to exercise her claws. She?s learned the meaning of the word ?no,? although she?s still very nosey about her human?s meals, and occasionally had to be gently squirted with a spray bottle to keep her off ­some counters. If she appears to be about to jump on a counter, all she needs now is to see the spray bottle be picked up, and she changes her mind and returns to playing or other good behavior. Opal is extremely treat-motivated and has a lot of training potential by utilizing them. She absolutely loves little cat treats that come in the crinkly zip-topped pouches, and as soon as she hears any container that sounds like a cat treat bag, she dashes to you, hoping it is one of her treats!
Although she?s not a super-cuddly cat, she does really enjoy cuddling with her humans of choice on her own terms, and will even nuzzle right up to your neck, and occasionally even give you a kiss. Opal is independent enough though to be the one in charge of when to get that loving. She?s attached to being with another cat, like her mom, so she should be in a home with at least one more buddy for her to play and sleep with. While in foster care, when her mom left overnight to be spayed recently, poor Opal was so lonely that she cried for her mother and kept searching the house for her. She survived the separation, and is once again Cubby?s shadow. Opal would be a great match for someone who wants a somewhat active but yet independent cat who will love you greatly, but on her terms. As she matures, she may also become much more cuddly, as she has only begun her journey. Visit with Opal and see if she can be your precious gem.
